Iron is an essential trace element for growth of microorganisms. Certain microorganisms have throughout evolution developed specific strategies for iron uptake to survive under low-iron conditions. For this purpose, these microorganisms form siderophors (biological chelating agents), which are able to complex Fe<sup>3+<\/sup>-ions with high affinity, and dispense Fe<sup>2+<\/sup>\u00a0on the microorganism cell membrane. Compared to conventional pickling processes, the biological rust removal is harmless\/ safe for health and the disposal into wastewater is able without any concerns to the environment.
