Biological de-rusting
Rust mainly consists of iron(III) oxide and iron(II, III) oxide in which iron is trivalent or divalent. Iron is an essential trace element for growth of microorganisms. Certain microorganisms have throughout evolution developed specific strategies for iron uptake to survive under low-iron conditions. For this purpose, these microorganisms form siderophors (biological chelating agents), which are able to complex Fe3+-ions with high affinity, and dispense Fe2+ on the microorganism cell membrane. Compared to conventional pickling processes, the biological rust removal is harmless/ safe for health and the disposal into wastewater is able without any concerns to the environment. In addition, the manufacturing process saves energy and is environmentally friendly.
